What is GoogleImageProxy?

If you see a large number of opens coming from Mountain View, California or with a User-Agent labeled GoogleImageProxy, don't worry—this is a normal behavior for Gmail users.

How it works

When a Gmail user opens your email, Google's servers fetch all the images (including your tracking pixel) and store them in their own cache. This process is called "Proxying". Instead of your recipient's actual IP address, you see Google's server IP.

Impact on Data

  • Location: Shows as "Mountain View, CA" or simply "USA".
  • Accuracy: Individual recipient opens are still counted correctly, but geolocation data is obfuscated.
  • Privacy: This is a standard privacy feature implemented by Google to protect their users' real-time location.
